Essential Skills Manitoba is a not-for-profit organization that provides Essential Skills assessment and training. We are seeking qualified candidates for the following position(s):

Operations Manager

This position is accountable for administering and managing all day-to-day duties (programming, human resources, operational planning) through leadership of the employees and contractors. This is accomplished while meeting the demands of a non-profit organization and its corresponding funders, partners and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in leading a diverse team to success in an educational organization. They will have a proven understanding of educational principles, with a specific focus on adult education.

The ESM team includes a mix of Teachers, Facilitators, Finance and Administration staff. For success, it is important that the candidate have understanding and be able to provide direction in all functional areas.


Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate has the following qualities:

  • Strong communication skills, a sense of urgency and a reputation of integrity, trust and transparency
  • A demonstrated ability to effectively manage operations that include several separate programs and employee groups which, for success, must work collaboratively
  • A demonstrated ability to an adult education organization toward success
  • An established reputation of excellence in leadership, with experience in performance management and professional mentorship
  • A proven ability to build and grow partnerships and collaboration amongst varying internal and external groups. External groups could include representatives from the Province of Manitoba, non-profit organizations and/or workplaces
  • An accomplished record in terms of fiscal responsibility and financial management
  • A preference for working in and with culturally diverse settings/individuals

The Operations Manager will be expected to work independently, productively and exclusively in the best interests of ESM, while respecting the values of teamwork, creativity, and commitment to the success of the organization through support of its people, learners, and partnerships.

Essential Skills Instructor

Directly reporting to the Operations Manager, the Instructor will be responsible for Essential Skills assessment and training and for the delivery and implementation of Essential Skills based curriculum which includes: lesson plans, evaluation processes, classroom instruction, as well as one-to-one and group-based instruction. Other duties include the development of assessment tools, report writing, and administrative tasks.

Ideally, the successful applicant will have:

  • A degree in Education or adult education/EAL training or experience as a Vocational Education Teacher or a Workplace Trainer
  • The ability and experience to demonstrate the relationship between the Essential Skills and work
  • Experience working with diverse, multi-barriered, multi-cultural participants
  • Expertise in Numeracy and Computer Use instruction would be an asset

Role/Responsibilities

  • Delivery of curriculum and programs
  • Develop classroom exercises to enhance and/or improve participants’ Essential Skills
  • Define student learning objectives based on employer/industry requirements
  • Deliver formative and summative evaluations to measure student learning
  • Collaborate with other ES instructors
  • Maintain accurate and complete participant records

Qualifications

  • Degree in Education or Adult Education/EAL training or experience as a Technical Vocational Teacher or Workplace Trainer
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Adult Education
  • Knowledge of Essential Skills
  • Experience working with multi-barriered, multi-cultural participants and those furthest from work

Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Working knowledge incorporating Essential Skills in an employment assistance capacity
  • Ability to facilitate groups and provide one-on-one instruction
  • Strong abilities in both oral and written communication, writing reports, business communications

Correspondence and Presentations

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Case Managers and work well with other colleagues
  • Strong work ethic, planning, and organizational abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and complete work within a demanding work schedule
  • Proficient in the use of: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Power Point and Excel, and sufficient skills to help students use electronic resources

  • A degree in Education or adult education/EAL training or experience as a Workplace Trainer.
  • The ability and experience to demonstrating the relationship between the training and work.
  • Experience working with diverse, multi-barrier participants.

The Essential Skills (ES) Instructor/Assessor is responsible for the delivery and implementation of Essential Skills based curriculum which includes: ES lesson plans, evaluation processes, classroom instruction, as well as one-to-one and group-based instruction.
