REACH FORWARD is a 14-week, full-time program that provides training in Employability Skills, Life Skills, and Essential Skills. All training and activities used in the program will reflect real workplace documents, situations, and practices. The training is based on your needs and will be related to the Essential Skills required for your chosen occupation.
In addition to Essential Skills upgrading, you will receive training in Employability Skills and Life Skills. These lessons will range from time management to customer service, and healthy personal relationships to life and work balance. You will also have the opportunity to work independently and as a group, while developing your communication and adaptability skills.
Throughout the program, you will be formally assessed on Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Document Use, and Digital Technology.
Your Thinking, Working with Others, Continuous Learning, and Oral Communications skills will be assessed through observation and self-assessment. Your Employability Skills will also be assessed through observation throughout the program.
JOB SHADOW EXPERIENCE
During the program, you will have the opportunity to experience a three-day job shadow placement and a five-day work experience. You will get to observe and experience a work environment related to your chosen occupation.
During the 14-week program, you will be given the opportunity to earn the following certifications:
- WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems)
- Manitoba Health Certified Food Handler
- PHIA (Personal Health Information Act)

ESM staff have access to and knowledge of various supports for every need. While in the program, please speak with your instructor if you are struggling or need assistance with anything that may be hindering your success.
Expect to be in class (or training off-site) Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM for the full 14-weeks. You will get two 15-minute breaks and one 45-minute lunch break each day.
Upon completion of the Reach Forward program, a Final Report identifying your skill levels and recommendations will be developed.
The reports will identify your current Essential Skills levels and skill gains in all nine components. Feedback will also be provided on strengths and areas for development for all Essential Skills, as well as your Employability Skills and Life Skills.
A copy of your Final Report will be forwarded to your Employment and Income Assistance Case Coordinator and your Training and Employment Services Career Development Consultant. They will also receive progress and attendance reports throughout the program. A copy of your Final Report will be mailed to you as well.
How to Register
Prior to enrolling in this program, you will need to complete an Essential Skills assessment and then be referred by your Employment and Income Assistant Case Coordinator or your Training and Employment Services Career Development Consultant.
